About the Project

A major construction company needed to improve decision-making regarding crane operations at urban construction sites, where wind conditions are influenced by high-rise buildings, dense development, and varying site conditions. A dedicated wind gust forecasting and early warning solution was developed to assess wind conditions at crane operating heights and support real-time operational and safety decisions.

The system integrates high-resolution meteorological forecasts, analysis of urban environmental effects, height-specific wind forecasting, and an operational alerting mechanism. The result is a decision-support tool that helps reduce risk, improve workplace safety, and increase operational certainty at complex construction sites.

1

Initial Situation

Cranes at construction sites often operate in dense urban environments near high-rise buildings, narrow streets, and varying terrain. In these environments, wind flow is not uniform, and buildings, local topography, and site characteristics can generate strong wind gusts, turbulence, and rapid changes in wind speed.

Extreme weather events have become more frequent in recent years, including short-duration strong wind gusts that may affect the safety of work at height. For construction companies operating cranes, even localized changes in wind conditions can affect on-site decision-making, operational continuity, worker safety, and overall risk management.

General weather forecasts do not always provide sufficient detail regarding the unique wind conditions created within urban environments or at crane operating heights. This created a need for more precise, site-specific information to support real-time operational and safety decisions.

2

The Challenge

The primary challenge was to develop a system capable of forecasting wind conditions in a complex urban environment, where wind speed and behavior can vary significantly between locations and at different heights.

The system needed to address several key requirements:

  • Early forecasting of wind gusts that could affect safe crane operations
  • Forecasting at crane operating heights rather than only at ground level
  • Identification of unusual wind conditions in dense urban environments
  • Real-time operational alerts
  • Decision support for continuing operations, suspending crane activity, or preparing in advance
  • Improved construction site safety and reduced operational disruptions
  • A simple and accessible tool for safety personnel, site managers, and field teams

Turning Weather Data into Operational Decisions

The system assesses wind conditions at crane operating heights and provides early warning of conditions that may affect site safety and operations.

The Solution

EnviroManager Ltd. developed a dedicated wind gust forecasting system for crane operations in urban environments. The system combines advanced meteorological models, up-to-date field data, analysis of urban building effects, and algorithms for forecasting wind speeds at different heights.

The system enables early identification of unusual wind conditions, generates real-time alerts, and provides users with a site-specific operational overview. Unlike general weather forecasts, the solution accounts for the localized effects of the urban environment on wind patterns and provides information tailored to crane operations and individual site characteristics.

The solution improves on-site decision-making, reduces safety risks, helps minimize unplanned work stoppages, and supports more efficient construction operations under changing weather conditions.

System Components Implemented in the Project

  • High-Resolution Wind Forecasting
The system provides site-specific wind forecasts that account for the urban environment and local variations in wind speed.
  • Height-Specific Wind Forecasting
The system forecasts wind speeds at different heights, including crane operating heights, rather than relying solely on near-surface wind conditions.
  • Urban Environment Impact Analysis
The system analyzes the effects of buildings, development density, topography, and the surrounding urban environment on local wind patterns.
  • Real-Time Alerting Mechanism
The system provides early alerts when forecast wind conditions may affect crane operations or workplace safety.
  • Operational Decision-Support Interface
Information is presented through a clear and accessible interface, enabling field teams to assess risk levels and make fast, data-driven decisions.
  • Advance Planning and Preparedness
The system supports advance preparation for challenging working conditions, allowing teams to plan lifting operations and organize work schedules according to forecast wind conditions.
